So what better way to start out a new blog than to share pictures with my non-existent readers? I think it's a fabulous way to begin this magical adventure, so here I commence in my lengthy narrative about con and all its glorious everything. I was pretty stoked to find out that Ohayocon's theme this year was steampunk, which meant that everyone had the excuse to wander around looking absolutely amazing in every possible way. Steampunk people always go all the way out for everything, so I got to see some wonderful costumes and have discussions with intellectual people. It was quite startling to find people of that intelligence at a con, so it was nice to converse with them and their faked, but still quite believable, British accents. Some guy even let me hold his gun. Therefore, it was quite spectacular.
As for me, I'm more in to anime and manga than I am into steampunk (though I do hope to remedy this by reading some of the literature these con-goers suggested) which is why I dressed in my usual half-trying sort of cosplay. I went as Ciel Phantomhive from Kuroshitsuji and looked absolutely nothing like him. You can see I'm the one on the far right that stands out from the rest of this adorable group and it's because I didn't want to waste my time sewing one of the official outfits or buying one, so I just grabbed stuff out of my closet and, there you have it: cosplay. Still, these folks were really nice, as was everyone else for Friday and half of Saturday, so I can't complain. A lot of people thought I looked cool and "gothic" styled, which was a nice compliment IMO. Also, the best part of this outfit was that, for some reason, the Ben Folds remake of Dr. Dre's Bitches Ain't Shit got stuck in my head. So I walked around con with a pimp cane and a top hat singing this chorus for a while, bursting into the loudest tone-deaf version of this part of the song right in front of...a little kid. I didn't expect there to be a five year old there, I swear, but there she was. Looking all cute and wide-eyed up at me. And in that moment, I knew for sure that I'm going to Hell. At least my friends will be there too, so maybe it's not so bad.
The really awesome thing about this con was that I realized something quite important: I don't really go to cons for the anime/manga anymore. Even cosplay isn't what I go for any longer. I really just go so that I can hang out with the best people in the world for three days, eat and sleep and party whenever I want and overall just have a carefree weekend. It's wonderful to go and escape all the stress in life and just go party, even if partying for me consists of reruns of old Pokemon movies and eating Oreo cookies in the dark with a giant screw through my head.
My friends truly are wonderful: here they are, minus myself and my good friend who couldn't make it this year. We were very proud of our friend in the brown vest, Emmik, who created a working crank organ out of scratch. He then figured out how to play four or five songs on it and entered into the steampunk competition. We were his cheering section and he walked away with Best Prop and Best in Show, which basically means he's the most awesome person ever.
Another amazing person is my friend Sarah, who went from not knowing what anime was to suddenly being a bigger lover than me. She pulled this outfit together entirely by herself and looked amazing. People were falling all over themselves to get pictures of her, because she's so ridiculously gorgeous. She wanted to come back to con after last year's experience, so she's turning into a little con veteran and hopefully plans to come back next year too~!
Me with a screw through my head. Possibly the most comfortable cosplay I've ever worn because it didn't involve putting on high heeled boots and carrying around a giant hammer. And even though I was the shortest Dr. Stein at the Soul Eater photoshoot, but I was pretty hot. Or at least, that's what everyone told me. And this was all before a certain someone (Michael) spilled orange soda all over the back of this outfit. {We were watching Pokemon and got a little too excited, I guess.} But still, I looked amazing and felt amazing and got stopped by con security at least three times to check to make sure my cigarettes were fake XDD
Something else amazing about con? THIS. Emmik put down his crank organ long enough to put this outfit on. Dressed as Excalibur from Soul Eater, this man is like, eight feet tall and absolutely wonderful in every way. And then, the person on the right appeared so there were two of them. I didn't know what to think, because I thought for sure that the universe was going to implode.
This year was a first for me in two ways! For one, I joined my friend's group and went to Buca di Beppo for dinner on Saturday night. With her group and mine combined, we had about 25 people. We ended up sitting at separate tables, but my group of nine or ten or whatever got to clump together, which was awesome. The second thing that was unusual was that my good friend, Celeste, wasn't in my room, BUT she brought her amazing boyfriend and his friend to dinner, so I got to talk with these hilariously amazing guys all night. They were so chill and awesome that I completely approve of the relationship 110%. And to toast this, we all put our spoons together and...
...ate that monstrous thing. It was delicious and after garlic bread, pizza, and tasting everyone's pasta, plus that thing, I know for sure my diet has completely been catapulted off the radar. I won't be able to fit in real pants for a while, but at least I'll be able to say that night was definitely a good, good night.
